I was shopping for hair care products when I felt someone staring at me. It wasn’t the store clerk, checking me out to see if I were going “to liberate” her most popular products without paying for them. It was an African-American woman giving my hair the once-over. I could see that she wanted to say something to me, but I wasn’t in the mood for any foolishness. So, I smiled at her and said hello. She seized the opportunity to say, “I love your hair, but there’s no way my husband would ever allow me to go natural. He would divorce me.” I could write a song given the number of times I’ve heard this type of backhanded compliment.
